Privacy & security
Your data, on your terms
A viva is stressful enough without wondering what happens to what you say. Here's exactly what we do.
No voice recordings
Audio is processed live to run the session — it is never recorded or saved.
Encrypted throughout
Everything we do store (your thesis and session transcripts) is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Delete it any time
One click removes a thesis and every transcript, session, and feedback record tied to it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a university email to sign up?
Yes. Defensia is currently only available to students at UK universities, so you'll need to sign up with your university (.ac.uk) email address.
What counts as session time?
Time is tracked from when you join the live audio session to when it ends. Uploading your thesis, browsing examiners, and reviewing feedback don't consume session time.
Do credits expire?
No. Minutes you purchase are yours to use whenever you need them. There's no expiry date.
What happens if I run out of minutes?
You can top up any time from the Credits page — a single extra hour, a discounted 3-hour bundle, or another Viva Pass. There's no subscription to manage either way.
Can I use the same thesis for multiple sessions?
Yes. Once your thesis is uploaded and indexed, you can run as many sessions against it as you like.
Is my thesis kept private?
Yes. Your thesis is stored securely in your account and is never shared with other users or used to train AI models. See our privacy policy for full details.
Do you record or store my voice?
No. Audio is processed in real time to run the conversation and is never recorded or saved. Only a text transcript of what was said is kept, so we can generate your feedback — and you can delete it any time by deleting the thesis document it's linked to.
